Welcome to CyberBytes where we teach you about different Cybersecurity topics in small “bytes”. This week’s topic is Vishing, Smishing, and Phishing.
You’re hanging out with a friend, when suddenly… RING! A scammer calls on your phone and you hear their voice, claiming to be “Officer Bob” from the “Federal Bureau of Give-Me-Your-Money”, that is a Vishing scam.
Next, DING! You get a text message that says: “URGENT! Your bank account is frozen! Click here to fix it!” That’s a Smishing scam.
Then, you check your email and see: “Congratulations! You’ve won a lifetime supply of FREE DORITOS! Just enter your SSN and bank details.” That’s Phishing, and unless you’ve been entering Dorito sweepstakes it’s a scam.
Pause before you respond. Scammers rely on urgency, but you’re smarter than that. Take time to learn these tricks so you can be prepared.
